Refractometer set (cloud point)

Using 1–2 drops of the test liquid, the hand-held refractometer determines the cloud point of water-propylene glycol, water-ethylene glycol and water-ethanol mixtures, as well as the refractive index of any liquid.

The cloud point
When a antifreeze mixture is cooled down to the freezing point, it does not freeze abruptly at a specific temperature; rather, the freezing process is continuous – i.e.:
at a certain temperature (= cloud point), the mixture forms its first ice crystals, and an increasingly viscous mass then develops, which is completely frozen at a correspondingly lower temperature (= pour point).
The frost point used in most refractometers lies within the range where the antifreeze has already become a viscous mass (slushy ice slurry) and is therefore no longer suitable for applications in the solar or heat pump sectors.
